Volunteer Maryland To Partner With 20 Service Sites Across Maryland for 2020-2021 Service Year
AmeriCorps Members Address Critical Needs for Maryland Communities
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Volunteer Maryland began the 2020-2021 service year and announced 20 service sites who will welcome 20 AmeriCorps members recruited as Volunteer Coordinators of the Volunteer Maryland Class of 33. This group will start their 11-month commitment to mobilizing and managing volunteers for each assigned service site. Volunteer Maryland partners with nonprofits, government agencies, and schools that address critical community needs, including but not limited to education, economic opportunities, and environmental stewardship.
“Volunteer Maryland aims to serve the entire state. This year, we are excited to have a presence in 7 counties, including Baltimore City and within the Eastern Shore, and expect to see that number rise as we head into site partnership negotiations this winter,” said Sharon Lewis, Executive Director of Volunteer Maryland. “With the talents and motivation of the Volunteer Maryland Class of 33, we are eager to see their positive impact during this difficult season as we expect a high demand for the work of our members due to COVID19.”
These 20 AmeriCorps members just wrapped up their three-week pre-service training, which was held virtually for the very first time in Volunteer Maryland’s 28-year history due to COVID19. During that period, AmeriCorps members had the opportunity to participate in Maryland Day to Serve, Governor Larry Hogan’s initiative designed to encourage all Marylanders to volunteer helping neighbors and strengthen Maryland communities. Volunteer Maryland AmeriCorps members most recently participated in a socially-distant service project hosted at the Maryland Food Bank in which members packed over 1,200 meals for children across Maryland.

- Girl Scouts of Maryland – Anne Arundel County
- Housing Authority of Baltimore – Baltimore City
- InterFaith Partners for the Chesapeake – Anne Arundel County
- Literacy Council of Montgomery County – Montgomery County
- Maryland Emergency Management Agency – Baltimore County
- Maryland Environmental Trust – Anne Arundel County
- Project Plase – Baltimore City
- Sassafras Eastern Shore Land Conservancy – Kent County
- Seeds for Success – Anne Arundel County
- Senior Legal Services – Baltimore City
- TESS – Community Action Agency of Montgomery County
- There Goes My Hero – Baltimore County
- UMB CURE Scholars Program – Baltimore City

Since 1992, Volunteer Maryland has built more than 350 partnerships with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools across Maryland. Volunteer Maryland places and trains more than 700 Volunteer Coordinators to bridge the gap between communities facing critical challenges and citizens who want to volunteer to solve those challenges. Through Volunteer Maryland partnerships, more than 135,000 volunteers have been mobilized to serve 2 million volunteer hours in communities around the state. Some members move from out of state to serve specifically within the Volunteer Maryland AmeriCorps program.
