Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism Announces  Black History Month Leadership & Service Award Recipients

Governor Hogan Proclaims February as Black History Month in Maryland

Annapolis, MD –The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism today announced the award recipients for the Black History Month Leadership & Service Awards in celebration of Black History Month proclaimed by Governor Hogan. The awards ceremony will be hosted at the Banneker-Douglass Museum. The annual program celebrates and recognizes Maryland-based, African American-founded organizations or groups of volunteers that demonstrate commitment and dedication to changing Maryland for the better.

“Maryland is leading through service and making a transformative impact in the community as a result,” said Nicki Fiocco, Director of the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. “The Black History Month Leadership & Service Awards Program is an opportunity to celebrate and support what African American Marylanders are doing to make Maryland a better place for all of us to live, serve, and work.”

Nominations were submitted from across the state of Maryland and were evaluated for innovative use of volunteers, inclusive volunteer recruitment, and creative partnerships to address community-specific needs.

  5. Griots’ Circle of Maryland Inc. Growing Griots’ Literacy Learning Program (Baltimore City)
  6. J.O.Y. Baltimore (Baltimore City)
  7. Known as Monique (Baltimore)
  8. The Brownsville Project (Frostburg)
  9. The Safe Ride Foundation (Frederick)
  10. Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions (St. Mary’s County)
