ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan and First Lady Yumi Hogan last evening joined Maryland’s Muslim community leaders in observance of Ramadan tradition. Together with the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, they gathered to celebrate community and break fast at Government House.

“Tonight serves as a reminder of Maryland’s incredible cultural diversity and of the many things we can learn from one another,” said Governor Hogan. “During Ramadan, Muslims around the world take time to reflect on and to practice their faith through fasting, giving alms, and praying, and tonight we are pleased to have this opportunity to join together with you to celebrate.”

Muslims worldwide observe the month of Ramadan through prayer, fasting, self-reflection and acts of charity to remember the first revelation of the Quran to the prophet Muhammad, according to Islamic belief. The celebration of the Islamic holy season of Ramadan this year began in the evening on April 1 and will end in the evening on May 1.

According to the Maryland Muslim Council, approximately 350,000 Muslims from 60 different countries live in Maryland. During Ramadan, the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives participates in traditions and acknowledges the strong contribution of the Muslim community in Maryland to business, community development, charity, volunteering, public service, and more.

Since 2015, the Interfaith Outreach component of the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives has worked to build interfaith partnerships to foster communication and collaboration in an effort to build a stronger Maryland. The office works with myriad faith leaders and organizations to address community-based needs at the grassroots level.
