Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month With Service

Joins Statewide Day to Serve Initiative

ANNAPOLIS, MD – National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, celebrates the cultures and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino American communities in the United States. In Maryland, the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs will be recognizing the month with service.

“This year, our commission wanted to embrace the spirit of service and volunteer each week in a different Maryland Hispanic community,” says Lorena Rivera, director of the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs. “We’re giving back to the very groups being celebrated by National Hispanic Heritage Month.”

The commission’s service coincides with Day to Serve, an annual, month-long community service initiative in which Maryland joins Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia – for a fifth consecutive year – in encouraging its residents to get out and volunteer. Whether it’s for half a day, one weekend, or a different project each week, every effort counts. The three states and Washington, D.C., track the number of volunteers, hours served, pounds of food donated, and more in a friendly competition.
