Maryland’s World War I Centennial Commission was established by Governor Larry Hogan through an executive order to create ways for the state’s residents and its visitors to remember, commemorate, and learn about the meaning of World War I and the role of Marylanders during that time.
Several sites in Maryland are significant to World War I, including:
- Fort Meade, which operated as a training site for 400,000 soldiers
- Aberdeen Proving Ground, the oldest proving ground in the country
- Fort McHenry, which was the largest receiving hospital in the country during the war and tended to more than 20,000 wounded returning to the U.S.

Upcoming Commission Meetings:
Official commission meetings during 2019 will take place on the first Monday of every other month, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Conference Room A at 100 Community Place, Crownsville, Maryland 21032.
