Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan joins Maryland Food Bank in welcoming 40,000- pound food drop-off donation

ANNAPOLIS, MD – First Lady Yumi Hogan today joined the Maryland Food Bank in welcoming 40,000 pounds of food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as part of Day to Serve. Day to Serve is an annual, month-long initiative held from September 11 to October 10 in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia, encouraging citizens to choose a day to volunteer in their communities. Under the leadership of Governor Hogan, the Maryland Department of Transportation has also donated over 35,000 pounds of food to the Maryland Food Bank for this initiative, and all state employees have been given four hours of administrative leave to participate in a Day to Serve activity.

“I’m pleased to be here today with individuals who are dedicated to fighting hunger,” said First Lady Yumi Hogan. “Today’s generous donation is essential to Marylanders and their families and we thank the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for leading by example in serving others.”

For more than 35 years, the Maryland Food Bank has partnered with communities across the state to distribute food to individuals and families in need. Currently, it distributes more than 112,000 meals per day – nearly 41 million meals annually – and operates from three facilities in Baltimore, Salisbury, and Hagerstown.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated food to the Maryland Food Bank as part of the Day to Serve initiatives for the past four years. The donation received today has an approximate value of $50,000 and will contribute to making over 33,000 meals to feed more than 830 families across Maryland.
