Free Gift for “We Rise” Early Youth Conference Registrants

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Governor’s Office on Community Initiatives’ Banneker-Douglass Museum celebrates the International Museum Day under the theme of “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition.” In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) instituted this special day to raise awareness that museums contribute to cultural exchange and enrichment, mutual understanding, and peace. This year, 40,000 museum professionals from over 141 countries celebrate the day on May 18.

“In keeping with this year’s International Museum Day theme, the Banneker-Douglass Museum remains committed to providing programming which highlights education and youth-centered projects, as well as continuing to build on Governor Hogan’s support for the historic preservation of our building and the Year of Frederick Douglass,” said Chanel Compton, Director of the Banneker-Douglass Museum. “In promoting African American history and providing a cultural hub for Maryland, we honor our rich and diverse national history, and preserve it for generations to come.”

In honor of the International Museum Day, the museum shares a free gift for ages 13 to 17 who register to the “We Rise! Youth Conference” by this Saturday. Anyone interested can register here. The conference will consist of a youth-led panel discussion on imagery, education, and social justice, as well as an exhibit featuring works from participants in the “We Rise! Photojournalism Project.” The conference will be held on June 28 at the Banneker-Douglass Museum.
