Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan Joins Maryland Food Bank to Welcome Food Drop-Off Donation

ANNAPOLIS, MD – First Lady Yumi Hogan today joined the Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore in welcoming 60,000 pounds of food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as part of Day to Serve. Day to Serve is an annual, month-long initiative proclaimed by Governor Larry Hogan. It is held from September 11 to October 10 in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia, encouraging citizens to choose a day to volunteer in their communities.

“Growing up on a chicken farm in post-war South Korea, I saw first-hand the importance of reaching out and helping those in need. I would like to acknowledge the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the tremendous support of Day to Serve and this generous donation for Marylanders in need. The nutritious meals donated today will keep Maryland communities strong and vibrant and help Maryland families raise healthy children,” said First Lady Yumi Hogan. “When we help others, we are helping to build stronger bonds and stronger communities. I want to sincerely thank the many citizens who took part in this year’s Day to Serve, and for choosing a day to dedicate their time and talents to volunteerism and service in our communities. Each of you is a valued part of our efforts to truly change Maryland for the better.”

In addition to today’s food drop-off, staff from the Governor’s Coordinating Offices joined the Maryland Food Bank to help pack food boxes. Governor Hogan has granted state employees four hours of administrative leave to participate in a Day to Serve project.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Maryland Food Bank, operating from three facilities in Baltimore, Salisbury, and Hagerstown. Last year they provided 37 million meals, over 44 million pounds in total, or an average of 102,000 meals per day.

For the past 4 years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated food to the Maryland Food Bank as part of the Day to Serve initiative. The donation received today will help provide 50,000 meals to food-insecure families, children, and seniors across Maryland.

First Lady Yumi Hogan presented a Governor’s citation to Mr. Clayton Foulger from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in recognition of his dedication and leadership for food donations to the Maryland Food Bank over the last 4 years.
