The museum hosts family-friendly events and invites more than 58,000 American Indians and other citizens – especially children and youth – to honor the community’s history, to share the traditions and rich heritage of American Indian tribes, and to pass the legacy of the tribes to the next generations during the weekend after Thanksgiving Day.

The Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives and Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs will lead a kickoff ceremony on the morning of Friday, November 29 honoring American Indian Heritage Day, a state holiday established in 2008. The opening ceremony will include a traditional call for procession, honor song and dance, and presentation of the Governor Hogan’s proclamation of American Indian Heritage Month.

Other activities within the museum will continue through December 1 to include an interactive exploration of American Indian culture and traditions, displays of Accohannock and Piscataway Conoy tribes, Kentkatam (Let’s Dance), and art projects. The Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs coordinates programs and projects to further the cultural, educational, economic and social development of Maryland’s diverse Indian communities. The Commission also works to promote public awareness and appreciation of contributions American Indians have made to life in Maryland.
